Photography Teacher
My private photography course is based on you – where you stand with your photography knowledge, and where you want to go. So, after we have a brief assessment discussion, a photography course will be tailored for you and we’ll proceed.
All passionate learners are welcome to take a photo course with me – from novice photographers who need to master their DSLR controls, to professional photographers looking to go to the next level. Your personal course may include composition, lighting, talent direction, handling the pressure of a photo shoot, and more.
If you are in the NYC area, classes can be taken in person depending on the course content and meet location, or online via video chat.
Everybody that takes one of my courses gets access to On Set, my private photography discussion group where you can get support from me and other students, some of whom have become successful professional photographers. There is no subscription fee of any kind. On Set also contains sample photography bid forms and contracts you can use in your business.
Why me? I believe that learning photography is best achieved by doing photography, and one on one tutoring sessions are a great way to do just that. I have taught classes based on a customized version of the Brooks Institute of Photography program when I was an adjunct at Harrington College of Design in Chicago for five years, and was highly rated by students.
Also, I bet you would prefer to learn photography skills from someone with extensive commercial photography and teaching experience that makes pictures you find compelling. If my work resonates with you, I would love to help you not only become a better photographer, but a great one.
Contact me and let’s get started. It’ll be an honor to be a part of your journey as a photographer and human.

What My Students Are Saying
James is an extremely considerate and practical photography teacher that will help you become a better photographer.
Godman is a great photography teacher, one of my favorites for sure. His class was a challenge for me, but I always left feeling inspired to do my assignment, and a little more confident in my abilities.
Rachel Troxell
Another inspiration I have is James Godman. His work is HIGHLY experimental and I enjoy that he sets himself apart from other photographers with his unique style. James taught me a lot and has still kept me highly inspired to be as experimental as he is. I see him as one of my favorite photographers next to Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is also very experimental in her own way.
Majed Aeson
James Godman’s teaching style helped me learn and retain many techniques I don’t think I could have gotten elsewhere. He purposefully involved me in critiques and his attention to detail inspired me to shoot more creatively. James is a true artist, and has the heart and skills to share.
Dan Jones
James is one of my former teachers. He’s a wicked good photographer and a really nice man. He always pushed me and sometimes I was like “that d··k!” but he never showed complacency in his work and would not allow us to do so either.
